What is Pilates?

Pilates is a method of exercise designed and developed by physical therapist pioneer, Joseph H. Pilates.  Utilizing specially designed equipment, his innovative method educates, re-patterns, realigns, and balances the body.  Pilates offers a superior standard of kinetic movements that are physiologically sound.  It develops the muscles of the body from the inside out, improves suppleness of the limbs, functioning of the vital organs, and endocrine glands, clarifies the mind and develops the will

A Reformer is a resistance-based piece of equipment with a moving carriage that slides along a wooden or metal frame.  Strings and ropes provide assistance and resistance, and exercises are performed lying down, sitting, kneeling or standing. See video here.

The Pilates Chair is considered to be the most challenging piece of Pilates equipment in terms of building strength in the legs and shoulders.  Exercises on the Pilates chair are great for skiers, runners, tennis players, golfers and clients looking to increase power in the upper body for throwing, lifting and racquet sports.
